The Challenge
Home batteries have long been reserved for homeowners with solar panels on the roof, space in the garage, and an installer to wire everything up. MyGrid’s plug & play home battery stores solar or grid energy through a standard 230V outlet, without installation or a technician. This makes home storage available to everybody. A battery is only as smart as the platform behind it, however. To charge when prices are low, discharge when demand peaks, and behave grid-friendly, every battery needs to be connected, managed, and optimised in the cloud. For this, MyGrid builds on OpenRemote.
The Manager
The MyGrid platform is built on OpenRemote and runs all the logic and asset management behind the scenes. Every battery that is plugged in automatically registers to the platform, creating its corresponding asset and synchronising real-time data on state of charge, power flows, and device health. On top of this backbone, the OpenRemote rules engine runs the smart optimisation routines. Charging and discharging schedules are based on dynamic energy prices, weather forecasts, and solar surplus, calculated for every battery individually. A dashboard gives the MyGrid team full oversight of all installations in the field, from performance monitoring to remote support.
The MyGrid App
You control your battery with the MyGrid app, designed from the ground up using the OpenRemote web components. The app shows real-time and historical insights into charging, discharging, and savings. Users pick the strategy that fits them, whether that is maximising self-consumption of solar energy, trading on dynamic energy prices, or simply keeping the battery charged. Adding a battery is as easy as plugging it in and c0nnecting it to the app. The platform takes care of the rest.
Scaling Up With ModuleTwo
MyGrid released the ModuleTwo, a higher wattage battery with up to 1200W charging and 800W discharging per outlet, stackable up to 10.55 kWh with expansion units. The ModuleTwo runs on the same OpenRemote backbone as its predecessor. Onboarding the new product line required no re-engineering, as the asset types, optimisation routines, and provisioning flow simply extended to the new modules. Alongside it, an improved app gives users even better insight and control over their growing home battery system.
IoT Device Management for Manufacturers
Managing IoT devices can become complex for manufacturers distributing large numbers of products to customers, whether for your installer, distributor or service manager.
The OpenRemote IoT Device Management platform connects and controls different all your devices, using auto provisioning combined with MQTT broker, or its Edge Gateway. More importantly, alerts are set to monitor optimal performance as well as unexpected behaviour. Notifications are send to installers or end users to take action.
A dashboard for you as manufacturer, and mobile apps for installers and end users. All can be tailored to your specific context and identity, and hosted in your own secure environment.
