Industrial Energy Storage

VDL Energy Systems, a leader in industrial energy solutions, has transitioned from providing standalone hardware to offering a fully integrated, digital energy ecosystem. By leveraging OpenRemote, they launched VDL Powernet, a platform that connects advanced battery storage and hydrogen fuel cells to a secure, cloud-based monitoring and optimization suite.

The Challenge

VDL’s industrial energy systems. Deployed at factories, logistics hubs, and construction sites, are mission-critical. To ensure high availability and proactive maintenance, VDL required a solution that addressed:

  • Secure Remote Connectivity: Managing systems within private, highly protected networks.
  • Strict Cybersecurity: Meeting the highest security standards for industrial applications.
  • Demanding Environments: Ensuring stability across diverse operational sites (off-grid construction or grid-tied factories).

The Solution

VDL implemented a decentralized architecture using OpenRemote to bridge the gap between local hardware and cloud insights.

  • Local EMS (Energy Management System): Every VDL site runs a local instance of OpenRemote on an edge gateway. This allows for real-time local control, even if the internet connection is lost.
  • VDL Powernet Cloud: Site data is synchronized with a central cloud platform for multi-site management.
  • Secure Tunneling: A standout technical feature that creates a secure "bridge" for VDL service teams to access the web-based HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) of local PLCs and Battery Management Systems (BMS) remotely.
